Attending a live taping of Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a bucket-list experience for many fans. The Saturday Night Live Ticket Lottery
The primary way to get Saturday Night Live tickets is the annual lottery. Here is how it works for the 2026-27 season:
- When to enter: The lottery opens at 12:00 a.m. ET on August 1, 2026 and closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31, 2026. Emails sent before or after that window are disregarded, so there is no advantage to jumping the gun.
- How to enter: Send one email to SNLTICKETS at NBCUNI.COM. Include your first and last name and a short note on why you want to be part of the studio audience. Be personal and be yourself, but know that entering does not guarantee anything.
- One email per person: That is the current rule on NBC’s official tickets page. It used to be one per household, so if your whole crew wants in, each person can now send their own entry.
- You cannot pick a date: If you win, you get tickets to a random show date and time. Flexibility is the price of admission, especially if you are traveling to New York for it.
- How many tickets: NBC’s page says winners receive a set number of tickets. Historically that number has been two, and two is exactly what I got.
- Notification: You will only hear from NBC if you are selected, and there is no published timeline. Winners are notified throughout the season, often on short notice. My email arrived in late November for a December show, which gave me just enough time to book a flight. Be ready to move fast.
- Cost: Free. SNL tickets are never sold, so anyone selling them is someone you should walk away from.
SNL Standby Tickets: The Current Process
If the lottery does not go your way, standby is the other route. Heads up if you read this post before: the famous overnight campout with cards handed out at 7 a.m. on 48th Street is gone. NBC replaced it with a three-step process that involves a lot less sidewalk.
Step 1: Thursday, 10 a.m. ET. The standby reservation link goes live on NBC’s Tickets and Studio Tour page on the Thursday of a show week. You choose either the 8 p.m. dress rehearsal or the 11:30 p.m. live show, and you can request up to four spots. You enter your name, email, and party size. Demand is intense and capacity can fill within seconds, so be refreshed and ready at 9:59. If your request makes it through, a confirmation email with your reservation number follows, though it can take hours to arrive.
Step 2: Friday, 6 to 7 p.m. Your entire party checks in at the in-person standby line at the NBC Studios marquee on West 49th Street. Everyone needs a valid photo ID, and reservations are non-transferable, so anyone missing forfeits their spot. You line up in numerical order and stay in line until midnight. Quick bathroom breaks are fine. Bring snacks and layers, because this is still several hours outside in Manhattan. Tents, sleeping bags, alcohol, and line-sitters are not allowed, and if you leave the line, you lose your spot.
Step 3: Saturday, 12:01 a.m. Standby cards are handed out, one per person. Here is the important part: a standby card is not a seat. You come back Saturday evening, wait again, and find out just before showtime whether there is room for you. Standby fills whatever seats go unclaimed, so it comes down to no-shows.
One more note from people who have done the line: fans without reservation numbers have reportedly joined the back of the line behind the reserved group on Friday night. NBC does not advertise this, so treat it as a long shot rather than a plan.
Who Can Attend
You must be at least 16 years old to attend SNL, whether or not a parent or guardian is with you. Every guest needs a valid photo ID at the door. No ID, no entry. That applies to both lottery winners and standby hopefuls.
As for when shows actually happen, the Season 52 premiere date had not been announced when I updated this post. Recent seasons have premiered in late September or early October and run through late May, so plan around that general window.
The Experience: A Personal Account
On December 8th, 2012, I was one of the lucky few who got to attend a Saturday Night Live taping. Growing up, SNL was a Saturday night ritual in our house.
