When we first moved into our home, the great room was bright and airy with a coastal vibe. However, we began to crave something different: a look embodying modern elegance while maintaining comfort and warmth. After careful planning and consideration, we transformed our great room into a sophisticated space that reflects our current style. Here’s a glimpse into the details of this transformation.

A Fresh Canvas
One of the most significant changes we made was painting the brick wall in Sherwin Williams Snowbound. The crisp white hue instantly brightened the space and created a fresh, clean backdrop for the rest of the room. The light and airy feel of the Snowbound paint provided the perfect contrast to the darker, more dramatic elements we introduced.
The Heart of the Room
The centerpiece of our great room is the custom accent wall we designed around the 72″ smart fireplace. We opted for a striking finish using Portola Paints Roman Clay in Fade to Black, which adds a vibrant, textured look. Shout out to Custom Woodworks Plus for building this masterpiece.
The white oak shelf beneath the TV adds warmth to the otherwise bold wall, balancing the overall aesthetic and providing a space to display decor pieces.
Technology Meets Style
No modern great room is complete without a state-of-the-art entertainment system. We chose a 75” Sony TV for its sleek design and superior picture quality. To enhance the visual appeal, we installed a Philips Hue light strip behind the TV, which provides customizable accent lighting that can set the mood for any occasion. Whether it’s a movie night or a casual evening with friends, the lighting adds an extra layer of ambiance.
Immersive Sound
To complement the visual experience, we upgraded our audio setup to a 5.1 surround sound system featuring five 8″ Klipsch ceiling speakers and one powerful 12” Klipsch subwoofer. The Denon Home Theater Receiver is discreetly hidden on the other side of the wall, keeping the room clutter-free while delivering immersive sound quality. This setup ensures that every movie, show, or playlist is experienced in full, rich sound.
Elegant Accents
One of my favorite additions to the room is the console table covered in German Silver foil. Its unique texture and subtle sheen add a touch of luxury without overwhelming the space. The table’s clean lines and metallic finish perfectly complement the modern elegance we aimed to achieve.
Timeless Furniture
The furniture choices were critical in achieving the modern elegance we desired. We selected a marble and white oak wood coffee table and a matching accent table for their timeless appeal and ability to anchor the room. A grey accent chair adds contrast, while the white sectional couch offers ample seating and comfort. Together, these pieces create a stylish, functional, cohesive look.
Bringing the Outdoors In
To add a touch of nature to the space, we included a faux 8’ olive tree. Its lifelike appearance brings a sense of serenity and organic beauty to the room, softening the overall look and creating a more inviting atmosphere.
Thoughtful Details
In keeping with the modern theme, we chose a sleek black table lamp and an arched black mirror to add depth and interest to the room. The lamp provides soft, ambient lighting, while the mirror reflects light and space, making the room feel even larger and more inviting.
The Finishing Touch
Finally, we opted for velvet curtains to frame the large windows and add a touch of luxury to the space. The curtains’ rich texture and deep color enhance the room’s modern elegance, providing the perfect finishing touch to our redesigned great room.
Final Thoughts
Transforming our great room from a coastal retreat to a space of modern elegance has been an exciting journey. Each element, from the Snowbound brick wall to the velvet curtains, was carefully chosen to create a harmonious blend of style, comfort, and functionality. The result is a sophisticated, welcoming space reflecting our evolved taste and love for a well-designed home.
