Handicapped Parking Spaces

Why Handicap Parking Abuse Needs to Stop: A Rant on Respect, Responsibility, and Reporting

Parking in marked handicapped spaces is not only illegal, it is also extremely inconsiderate.

I’ve learned to lower my allotment of f*cks to give as I’ve gotten older, but seeing people with no disabilities using handicapped parking spaces grinds my gears. I see this all over the place, including at least once a week at my kids’ school.

You may be thinking, how do I know whether they’re handicapped? I don’t, and I know some people have hidden ailments that aren’t easily identifiable. However, not appropriately displaying a duly issued handicapped parking permit is reason enough for me. Repeat offenders usually use these spaces to drop off and/or pick up.

I have family members who legitimately rely on these valuable spaces. The last thing I want to see is people normalizing using handicapped spaces for quick errands.

Disabled parking abuse occurs whenever someone who does not have a disability park in a handicap parking space. Or when placards are loaned out to those who are not disabled.

Most municipalities have ways of reporting obvious handicap parking abuse. If you see this in Florida and want to do something about it, you can fill out FLHSMV’s Disabled Parking Abuse Complaint Form
