In the ever-evolving landscape of smart home audio technology, finding the perfect balance between performance, convenience, compatibility, and affordability can be a daunting task. However, the VSSL A.6x emerges as a formidable contender. Equipped with 12 channels and 6 zones, a ton of inputs and outputs as well as streaming integration, this amplifier aims to cater to the diverse needs of smart home techies and audiophiles. The best part is, you can purchase and set one of these up yourself! Let’s delve deeper into its features and performance to see why I chose this as the heart of my integrated whole-house audio system.
Connectivity
One of the standout features of the VSSL A.6x is its extensive range of connectivity options. Whether you prefer wireless streaming via AirPlay 2, Chromecast, or Bluetooth, or voice control through Amazon Alexa, this amplifier has you covered. Spotify Connect integration adds another layer of convenience for Spotify users. In addition to the streaming options, there are six matrixed analog inputs & outputs (fixed or variable). You can have six different users and devices playing six different songs in six different rooms simultaneously or enjoy the same source throughout.
Integration
I wanted a pair of ceiling speakers in every room of my house with the ability to stream music from our phones or using our voice. I also wanted to be able to utilize these speakers for TV audio instead of using sound bars in certain areas like the master bedroom and lanai. Using AirPlay, the Apple TVs can seamlessly stream audio to the VSSL A.6x. With this, I was able to avoid extra equipment and wiring as sounds from the TVs are magically (or, wirelessly) piped though the adjacent ceiling speakers.
I even utilized the matrixed RCA outputs to add wireless subwoofers in these areas to add some extra oomph. Not a DIYer? There are VSSL drivers available for both Crestron and Control4 professional installations.
Design
The VSSL A.6x boasts a sleek, minimalist design that can blend into virtually any space. It can also be rack-mounted with included brackets taking up 2U of space. Its compact form factor makes it ideal for both standalone setups and integrated home automation systems. VSSL has other streaming amplifier options as well including the A.1x which is a two-channel version and the A.3x which is has 6 channels and 3 zones.
Performance
In terms of performance, the VSSL A.6X excels on multiple fronts. With twelve channels and six zones, it offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing users to customize their audio setup according to their preferences. Each zone has its own 7-band adjustable equalizer as well as volume settings. Amplification is Class D with 50 watts per channel at 8 ohms RMS or 75 watts per channel at 4 ohms RMS. I power twelve Klipsch CDT-5800-C II in-ceiling speakers and the sound quality is impressive.
Experience
Setting up and configuring the VSSL A.6x is easy and done through their app. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a novice enthusiast, you’ll appreciate the simplicity and efficiency of the setup process. The seamless integration with streaming services and voice assistants further enhances the overall user experience, making it effortless to enjoy your favorite music whether you’re hosting a party, cooking, or simply relaxing.
I love the ability to easily start playing music anywhere in the house from my phone or walking in a room and asking Alexa to play some of my favorite tunes. I even created an Alexa routine where in the morning, our bedroom lights gradually turn on and the ceiling speakers start playing spa music as a gentle way to wake us up.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the VSSL A.6x streaming amplifier sets a new standard for home audio amplification. Its combination of easy implementation, extensive connectivity options, and exceptional performance make it a standout choice for anyone seeking to elevate their home audio experience. If you’re in the market for a versatile and feature-rich whole house audio solution that you can setup yourself, look no further than the VSSL A.6x.
